Hubert “Hoot” Wayne Watson September 01, 1934 – February 05, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Hoot Watson, 84, longtime Lawton businessman and community supporter, died Tuesday, February 5, 2019, surrounded by his family at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he had been medevaced after suffering a massive stroke in Lawton. Watson was born September 1, 1934, to parents Earl and Gertrude Cunningham Watson at Hardy Hospital in Ardmore. He was popular with his classmates throughout his education in the Ardmore Public Schools where he excelled in music and entertainment.

Following his graduation, he enrolled in Oklahoma A&M College, now OSU. At OSU, Hoot mixed his studies and supplemented his income by his band, “The Wayne Watson Quintet” combo which he led under the title of “Mister Wonderful”. While in college he met, wooed and wed fellow student Donna Cardona.

They were married in 1955 in Tulsa and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary last September. Hoot and Donna moved to Lawton in July of 1957 and soon established WW Vending Co., a family owned and operated business for over 50 years. The military installations served include Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.

The Watson Family has generously and actively supported many educational, arts, music and civic causes in Lawton. Memorial contributions may be made in Hoot’s honor to the music fund at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Surviving Hoot are wife Donna, of Lawton, daughter René Mitchell and son-in-law Michael Mitchell, of Edmond and sons Doug and Dean Watson, both of Lawton.

In addition, he leaves grandsons Tyler and Ryan Mitchell and Parker and Aaron Watson, and three great-grandchildren. In keeping with Hoot’s wishes, private entombment services for family only will be at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 16, 2019 with The Rev. Shelley Forrester, Rector officiating.

Further, Hoot always welcomed an opportunity to get together with family and friends to share favorite stories and fond memories and perhaps raise a glass to each other. To this end, all are invited to celebrate Hoot’s life at the Parish Hall at St. Andrew’s at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 16, 2019. No Ties will be allowed at the reception, also in keeping with Hoot’s wishes.
