Hugh’s Obituary Hugh T Wallace III, age 70, passed away on March 3rd, 2019 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Hugh T was born May 17, 1948 in Lumberton, NC and was the son of the late Hugh T Wallace Jr. and Ella Mae O’Neal Wallace. Hugh grew up playing sports in Lumberton where he excelled in football and golf.

In 1965 his family moved to Gastonia, NC and he attended Hunter Huss High School his senior year and successfully qualified for the North Carolina High School State Golf Championship. Immediately upon graduation and during the Vietnam conflict, Hugh T joined the United States Air Force and served with the Strategic Air Command as a jet engine mechanic at RAF Alconbury near Huntingdom in Cambridgeshire, England. Hugh T enjoyed his assignment and was blessed to serve as captain and starting quarterback for the Alconbury base football team.

Upon separation from the Air Force in 1970 he entered East Carolina University and graduated in February of 1973. He received his masters in education from UNC-Charlotte and his degree as Education Specialist In Administration from Appalachian State University. Hugh served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Gaston County School System during the 1970s through the early 2000s before retiring as principal from Hunter Huss High School in 2004.

Hugh T embarked on a new chapter in the fall of 2004 when he became assistant principal at Myrtle Beach High School. There he cemented his legacy as a man who cared for everyone, especially the underserved students. Hugh T was an educator, poet, philosopher, friend and a mentor to many students.

Hugh was an advocate and supporter of the public schools and took delight in the successes of the students, especially during graduation ceremonies. Hugh T was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Anne Wallace in 1965, his father, Hugh T Wallace Jr. in 1997 and his mother, Ella Mae O’Neal Wallace in 2016. Hugh T is survived by his brother, Phillip O’Neal Wallace, Phil’s wife, Kathy of Shelby, NC and his nephew, Phillip O’Neal Wallace II of Four Oaks, NC.

Hugh T married Donna Cannon Wallace in 1994 and remained close to her and her son, Jon Brumbaugh after their marriage ended. Hugh T was married to Constance Cannon Wallace from 1968 until 1990. Hugh T left behind extended family and friends who dearly loved him.

A special thanks to Hugh T’s friend and caregiver, Patricia Jordan for the attention she gave during his final weeks. The Seahawk Family celebration welcomes all to attend an informal drop-in or stay to share stories, memories, and friendship with each other about our confidant, our consultant, our mentor, our friend, Hugh T Wallace III. This Celebration takes place at Myrtle Beach High School on Tuesday, March 12th from 5-7 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hope House of Myrtle Beach, 708 Main Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577-3809. The Hope House of Myrtle Beach mission is to provide a healthy environment for registered Myrtle Beach High School students who are designated homeless and who are actively completing their academic requirements to receive a high school diploma. Myrtle Beach Funeral Home is assisting the family.
