Irene Olguin Barela March 31, 1938 – December 30, 2018 Share this obituary Upload Photo| Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Irene Olguin Barela, daughter of the late Jose Olguin and Fidelina (Amparan) Olguin, was born on March 31, 1938 in Raton, NM. Irene passed peacefully at home, with family by her side, on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the age of 80. Irene graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1957.
She married the late Silas Vialquin Barela on September 28, 1957. Irene served the United States Forest Service for 30 years. She began her career as a clerk typist and rose to the elite position of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Specialist.
Once she retired, Irene spent many years working for the University of New Mexico in the Continuing Education and Housing departments. Once Irene retired for good, she became a full-time grandmother and cared for her grandchildren, a part of her life she most cherished. In addition, she was an esteemed member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1517 in Albuquerque, where she made many lifelong friends.
Her life will always be treasured by her children and grandchildren: son, Steve Barela and daughter-in-law Linda Barela, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter, Cecilia (Barela) Fawcett and son-in-law Bruno Fawcett, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; her eight grandchildren, Miranda Barela, Gabriella Barela, Olivia Barela, and Steven Barela all of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Zachary Dye and his wife Lora Dye of Austin, Texas; Anthony Dye, Taylor Fawcett and Timothy Fawcett of Cibolo, Texas. Irene had many devoted nephews, nieces and friends. Irene is preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Olguin, Pete Olguin, Daniel Olguin, Bobby Olguin, Leo Olguin and sister Rose Avila.
Services will be held at St. Joseph’s on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Joseph’s Drive, NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87120, on Monday, January 7, 2018. A rosary will be recited for Irene at 8:15 am, with a mass to follow at 9:00 am. A crypt-side interment service will then take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd.
