James Robert Winstead, 83, of Evansville, IN passed away Monday, January 14, 2019. Jim was born on September 27, 1935 in Dixon, Kentucky to the late James W. and Violia Ruth (Towe) Winstead. Surviving Jim are his wife of 63 years, Janice (Egli) Winstead; daughter, Jamie Winstead of Evansville; granddaughters Stephanie (Lee ) Dimmett of Boonville, Kristina (Rob) Deters of Chandler, and Kelli Winstead of Evansville; 5 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kaleb Dimmett, Robert and Julia Deters and DaeJa Brown; sister, Jean Holder of Ft.

Branch, IN; nieces, Jan Burger, Jo Odom, Alanda Hendricks; nephew, Mark (Dawn) Fields; great nieces, great nephews and a lifetime of wonderful friends. Jim was an outgoing, hard-working man. At age 16, he graduated from Central High School, beginning his career in 1952.

He was the youngest manager at Kinney’s Shoe Store in Evansville when he met Jane on a blind date. Two years later, they started their married life in Owensboro, KY. He earned promotions, moved to three different cities before accepting a salesman position with Small & Schelosky in 1960.

In 1970, they built their family home in Newburgh, IN, where he volunteered time in the community. He was a charter member of the Newburgh Civitan Club, served on the Newburgh Town Board and led the Ohio County Homeowners Association. He enjoyed boating, playing golf, traveling and cheering on the grandkids and great-grandkids during school activities and competitions.

He earned awards and recognition for outstanding salesmanship throughout his 36 years of service with Mohawk Carpet Mills. In 1997, the same year they moved back to Evansville, he retired as a Senior Sales Executive. Jim cherished time spent with family, friends and neighbors.

We would like to say a special thank you to the friends that became extended family: Pat & Ria Allen, Sara & John Hinsey, Mike & Geema McGraw, and Kathy & Doug Behr. Jane and Jamie would like to acknowledge the caregivers who worked so hard to keep Jim comfortable and at home these past few years, especially Brittany Jepsen. Friends may visit with family from 3:00 until time of service at 6:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel 800 S. Hebron Ave.
