Obituary of Jeanne Torrey Jeanne Aglae Loring Young Torrey, died on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at her home at Mallard Landing in Salisbury. She was born on December 1, 1929 in Glen Cove, New York and was the daughter of the late Henry C. Young, Jr. and Helen Durbin Young. She was raised in several locales due to the family’s moves during the Great Depression – Williamstown, PA, Pleasant Valley, CT, and Washington DC.

After her family moved to Washington, she graduated from Western High School there and received an Associate’s Degree from George Washington University, where she met her husband, William A. Torrey, Jr They were married in Washington on November 18, 1950 and were married for 55 years. Following 13 years in Washington, the couple moved to Salisbury in 1963, when her husband relocated the family automobile dealership to Salisbury.

She was active in many community organizations and served as president of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Junior Auxiliary Board, and was a member of Green Hill Yacht and Country Club, and Asbury United Methodist Church. In 1984, she and her husband moved to Oxford, where they built a home on the Tred Avon River. She became a member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club, the Poplar Island Yacht Club, and was a volunteer at the Oxford Library, the Oxford Historical Society, and the Oxford Community Center Board.

She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton. The couple also had a home in St. Simon’s Island, GA and spent the winters there for many years. In 2008, following her husband’s death in 2006, she moved to Mallard Landing in Salisbury and was involved in a variety of activities there during the years.

She was particularly engaged in the Grandview Condominium Association Council at Mallard Landing and enormously fond of her many friends and neighbors there. She is survived by her three sons and their wives, William A. Torrey, III & his wife, Pamela of Portland, Maine, Robert Y. Torrey & his wife, Donna of Salisbury, and John F. Torrey & his wife, Lisa of The Woodlands, Texas; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Henry C. Young.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury with Rev. William Sterling officiating. A reception will be announced following the service.

The family will conduct a private inurnment service at Oxford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, PA, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.
