Jim attended school until the 10th grade when his father died in a motorcycle accident at which time Jim quit school and went to work to help support the family.

Jim married Karen Knockle in Dubuque, Iowa in 1958. Jim and Karen had two boys together during their marriage. Jim worked for many years in Dubuque, Iowa at Caradco, Wilson Dodge, Shike Richardson Buick, and John Deere.

Jim owned and operated his own automotive repair shop in Hollywood, CA from 1982 to 1986. Jim then moved to Mesa, Arizona and worked as an automotive technician for 13 years before he retired in 2002. Jim’s knowledge and expertise in automotive repair were exceptional and he took a lot of pride in his work each and every day.

Jim met his partner, Kay Dahl, in Mesa, Arizona in 1995 at the automotive repair shop where she took her car. Jim and Kay resided in Mesa, Arizona until Jim retired in 2002 when they moved to Apache Junction, Arizona during the winter months and to Blackduck Lake, Hines, Minnesota, during the summer months. Jim was an exceptional, loving partner to Kay.

Jim treated Kay’s daughters and their families as his own. His pride in family and respect of all people were his most admirable qualities. Kay has been Jim’s daily caregiver for the past several years as his Parkinson’s had advanced.

Jim had a deep love of anything he could tear apart, study, and put back together. Up until the time of his death Jim still thought long and hard about the detailed workings of anything with a moving part. There was nothing mechanical Jim could not fix – the more pieces he could disassemble the better.

Jim attended church services at La Hacienda in Apache Junction, Arizona. Jim enjoyed being outside and in the garage tearing things apart, golfing, fishing, playing games, visiting with friends and family, and most of all, spending time with “his girls” (granddaughters). His love and protection over them was endless and they knew it.

Jim is survived by his partner of 23 years, Beverly “Kay” Dahl; his son, Russell Ford, Texas; his daughter-in-law Cheryl Ford, Ft. Madison, Iowa; his daughters, Michele (Ed) Fisher, Northome, MN; Janelle (Joe) Albrecht, West Fargo, ND; his granddaughters, Kaylee Fisher and Alyssa Fisher, Northome, MN; and Taylor Albrecht, Grand Forks, ND; his great-granddaughter Zoey Raisch; his sisters, Mildred Fedderson, Dorothy Callahan, and Inez (Bill) Vondran, his brother-in-law Jack Peacock, all of Dubuque, Iowa, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and the many members of the Reinarz family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Alvah and Ellen Ford; his son, Jimmie Dahl Ford, Jr.; his brothers, Willard Ford, and Ralph Ford and his wife Lee; and his sister Norma Peacock.
