Joanne Marie Scantling, March 21, 1953 — November 19, 2018

Obituary for Joanne Marie Scantling Joanne Marie Scantling, 65, of Fake Hollow Road, York, died peacefully, Monday, November 19, 2018. Born on March 21, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Levere M. “Nuddie” Hengst and the late Elmyra Sarah (Jennings) Hengst. Joanne was the loving wife of the late John K. “Skinner” Scantling who died November 1, 2010.

Joanne was a graduate of York VoTech. While at VoTech, she was the first female student to wear pants to school leading to a female student protest that led to changes in the school’s dress code for females. Following graduation, she worked as a painter, mechanic, and animal handler for the former Wyeth Labs in Marietta.

Joanne was a member of Rivers of Life Fellowship. Joanne enjoyed life on the farm where she lived. She liked to go shopping and working in her garden.

Joanne was an avid hunter, especially pursuing deer and groundhogs. She enjoyed spending time kayaking and watching hummingbirds. Above all, Joanne loved to be with family, especially when she got time to spend with her grandson, Alexander D. Emenheiser.

In addition to her grandson, Joanne is survived by her daughter, Shelby L. Ilgenfritz and her husband, Rodger of Wrightsville; her son, Sheldon D. Smith of East Prospect; her sister, Shirley Pich of York; and her brother, Robert L. Hengst. Private services for Joanne will be held at the convenience of her family. Memorial contributions in Joanne’s memory may be made to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital, PO Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033 (please make checks payable to “Four Diamonds”).
