Obituary for Shirley (Hays) Shearer Shirley (Hays) Shearer, 95, of York, died surrounded by family, Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018. She was the wife of the late Richard G. Shearer.

Born in Worcester, MA on March 29, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Chester F. and Ethel W. (Bouthillette) Hays. Shirley was a graduate of William Penn High School (1940), York Hospital School of Nursing (1944) and Millersville University (1971). She also attended Penn State York.

She began her nursing career at York Hospital and retired as the school nurse at York Vo-Tech in 1985. Shirley was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she served on its consistory as a Sunday school teacher and home department member. She was a member of the York County School Nurses, PA Association of School Retirees, York County Association of School Retirees, and AARP Chapter #24 of York.

She volunteered at St. Paul’s Food Pantry. Shirley is survived by her children, Kandy Hughes and her husband, Stan of Georgetown, TX, Susan E. Pfaendler and her husband, Matt of York, Rev. Richard J. Shearer and his wife, Lynn of Danville, and Anne Azbill and her husband, Ron of York.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kim, Kelly, Shelley, Krista, Karen, Matt, Nikki, Jennifer and Becca; her great-grandchildren, Allie, Jake, Dylan, Lydie, Andrew, Mark and Clynton; her step-grandchildren and their families; and her sister-in-law, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Robert Hays. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov.

16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ, 100 Lafayette Street, York, PA 17401 with Rev. Peter A. Seiler officiating. Immediately preceding the memorial service, the family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Private interment will be held in Mount Rose Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Zion U.C.C., 100 Lafayette Street, York, PA 17401 or to the favorite charity of your choice.
