John Gilbert Edwards, 88 of Rehobeth Church Road, Shelby passed away, Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at his residence. Born January 29, 1930 in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Gilbert Willard Edwards and Essie Howard Edwards. He was retired from Container Corporation and was a member of Union Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Mattie Davis Edwards; son, John Robert Edwards; a granddaughter and husband, Betty… Read More » and Ronnie Ellis; a sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and JB Newton; mother-in-law, Alma Wood and son-in-law, Gene Hawkins. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Wood Edwards; daughter, Pat Hawkins of Shelby; two sons, Dale Masters of Lattimore and Chris Masters (Areshia) of Aiken, SC; brother, Newell Edwards (Shirley) of Rock Hill, SC and two sisters, Jane Adams of Cherryville and Mae Grigg of Taylorsville; 7 grandchildren, Kristi Bissett(Josh), Blake Champion, Dennis Edwards (Robin), Brent Masters (Shonnie), Brian Masters (Amanda), Hannah Temple (Brad) and Michael Masters; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Sunday at Union Baptist Church A funeral service will be 3:00 PM, Sunday at Union Baptist Church with Rev.

Michael Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby NC 28150.
