John was born in Amarillo, Texas on February 7, 1927. He married his High School sweetheart, Ruby Stevenson and moved to Austin in 1949 to attend the University of Texas.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army. John was always a self-employed man who described himself as a retired investor during his later years. Preceding him in death was his son, John Charles “Jay” Oates; a sister, Betty Veloz; a nephew Nicky Veloz and a great nephew, John Rogers.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Stevenson Oates; a daughter, Ellen Carlisle; a son, Jack Oates and wife Andrea; a sister, Martha Schaub; 2 nieces: Cannon Schaub and Virginia Rogers and a great nephew, James Rogers. He was blessed with 3 grandchildren: BC Carlisle and wife Diamond, Colby Oates and wife Amanda and Abbott Alice Oates; and 2 great-grandchildren: Asher Carlisle and Addalyn Jaye Oates. A viewing for Mr. Oates will be Wednesday, December 5, from 4: 00 PM – 7:00 PM at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, Austin, Texas.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 2:30 PM at Stinnett Cemetery, Stinnett, Texas. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Directors, Stinnett.
