Johnnie Roy Thomas July 04, 1944 – January 26, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Johnnie Roy Thomas, age 74 of Defuniak Springs, passed away Saturday, January 26th after a long illness. He was born July 4th, 1944 to John and Eva Thomas in Paxton, Florida. He graduated from Paxton High School.

After graduation, he took a job at Scott Paper Company in Georgiana, Alabama. After being involved in a motorcycle accident, he returned home to take a job at McDaniel Motor Company in Florala. He worked as a mechanic for many years, where he made many friends and became known as “the man who could fix anything”.

After many years as a mechanic, Johnnie decided to pursue a career in corrections. He was employed as a corrections officer at Walton Correctional Institution for more than 20 years and was respectively known as Sergeant JR Thomas. He was blessed with many musical talents and could play almost any instrument.

He enjoyed playing with the bands at the 24th of June Celebration in Florala and getting together with his friends to just pick and grin. After he retired from corrections, Johnnie looked forward to his daily afternoon ride with his son. As his health declined, he spent his time watching westerns and wrestling and enjoyed visits from family and friends.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents John and Eva Thomas, brother Jimmie Ray Thomas, and his wife of 33 years, Alice Thomas. He is survived by two brothers, Hayward Thomas (Barbara) and Harold Thomas (Brenda) and one sister, Dolores Tunnage. He also leaves behind one son, Johnnie Thomas Jr. and one daughter, Camille Campbell (David) and five grandchildren: Brian and Amber Thomas, Shelly and Sage Campbell, Laney Cosson, and longtime friend, Sylvia Drake.

Johnnie’s family will miss him always greeting them with, “It’s Such a Pretty World Today”. A special thank you to Sylvia for her devoted care throughout Johnnie’s illness, as well as Mary, Wes, and the rest of the team at Regency Hospice. Funeral services for Johnnie Roy Thomas will be 2PM Wednesday January 30, 2019 at Evans funeral Home .
