Joseph A. Martone, 94, was called home to the Lord on May 19th. Joe was born in Syracuse on March 7, 1925, to Raffaele and Maria (Pescatore) Martone. He graduated from Central High in 1943.

Joe served his country in the European and African Theaters. He was blinded on April 23, 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart with a three oak leaf cluster along with many other distinguished service medals. Joe was a true patriot and war hero.

In 1955, Joe married Ecla D’Amato, his devoted wife of 56 years in Paternopoli, Italy. They were blessed with four loving children and grandchildren. Joe enjoyed bowling, tandem bike riding, playing the accordion and traveling to the annual BVA National Conventions.

Joe was respected and admired for his unwavering optimism and endless determination. Joe and Ecla owned and operated Joe Martone’s Newstand at the Clinton Square Post Office. Joe was a parishioner of Holy Family Church and a member of many veteran organizations.

Joe was predeceased by his wife, Ecla, son, Joseph Jr., and siblings; Nicholas Martone, Frances Sackeli, Lillian Martone and Rosemary Kane. Joseph is survived by his daughters; Maria (Richard) Filippi and Rita Pecoriello, son; Ralph Martone, sisters; Theresa Cavallaro, Virginia (Peter) Convertino and Eleanor DeCarlo, grandchildren; Christina Filippi, Julianna (Brenner) Fahrenz, Michael and Anthony Pecoriello and Audrey Martone. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 pm Friday, May 24th, at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Avenue.

Funeral services will be held at 8:15 am Saturday, May 25th, at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:00 am at Holy Family Church in Fairmount. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum, DeWitt.
