Joseph’s Obituary Joseph McCullen Nash, 90, of Hemphill, Texas, formally of Bardstown, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in Hemphill Care Center. Joseph was born December 25, 1928 in Weldon, North Carolina to George Harold Nash and Mamie Marie McCullen Nash. He entered the United States Air Force on February 12, 1951.

After completing Basic Training and after a tour in Korea, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant on his first enlistment. Master Sergeant Nash was assigned as an AFROTC Training Sergeant and Education Technician from 1955-1958. From August 1958 through August 1965, he served in administrative positions in various units at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, taking time out to spend another isolated tour, this time in the 923 AC&W squadron, APO 434 in November 1962.

He was promoted to Technical Sergeant on December 1, 1964 and on August 9, 1965, he was assigned to the 2nd Reccy Tech Squadron, Barksdale AFB in Louisiana as administrative supervisor of the Operations Branch and NCOIC of the Manpower Unit, Operation Branch. In January 1968, MSgt Nash was reassigned to the 49th Tactical Fighter Wind, Spangdahlem AB, Germany and was further reassigned to the 66th Combat Support Group, RAF Upper Heyford, England in July 1968. On May 15, 1969, he entered the First Sergeant field.

He was promoted to MSgt on June 1, 1970 and arrived at Kincheloe AFB on October 23, 1970 and was reassigned as 1st Sergeant of the Field Maintenance Squadron. Sgt. Nash is a graduate of a NCO Preparatory School and the Strategic Air Command NCO Academy.

He has served as treasurer of the Kincheloe NCOAGA. Among the many awards and decorations that MSgt. Nash is authorized to wear are the Korean Service Medal with three Battle Stars, the united Nations Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with four bronze loops, National Defense Service Medal with one battle star, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with two bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

After his retirement, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 18 years and he attended St. Pius I Catholic Church in Hemphill, Texas and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is preceded in death by his wives; Mary Catherine Nash and Terri Gutherie Nash; his parents, George Harold and Mamie Marie McCullen Nash; and his daughter, Carol Elizabeth Nash Walter. He is survived by daughters, JoAnn Borel and husband, Christopher of Hemphill, Texas, Sharon Wanless and husband, Bill, of Edinburg, Illinois, and Diane Kaiser of Glen Burnie, Maryland; stepson, William Sell and wife, Ernie, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Frances Rawling of Virginia Beach, Virginia; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A Rosary will begin at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Visitation will follow rosary from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2019 at St. Pius I Catholic Church, 309 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Father Maria Susai Avula officiating. Military funeral honor ceremonies will be conducted by the Sabine County Honor Guard.

Serving as pallbearers are Joshua James, Bill Sell, Aaron Baker, Tony Miller, John Alexander Butler, Ronnie Lee Lackey, and Brent Wooten.
