Obituary of Laura Griffin Laura E. Griffin, age 67, of Corning, NY died Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Guthrie Corning Hospital, surrounded by her family. Laura was born on December 8, 1950 in Brooklyn to John and Constance (Nelson) Derby. She graduated with high honors from Madison Township Highschool and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Horticulture.

Laura was a life-long lover of nature and owned her own landscaping business. She was also a dedicated public servant, leading a team as the dietary manager for Bethany Manor for over 20 years. She was the kind of supervisor that led by example with patience, love, and compassion for her staff and residents.

She enjoyed drawing, painting, coloring, spending time with her family and friends, telling stories, and loved drinking her coffee. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine E. Basu of Corning; sons, John (Amy) Vargeson of Painted Post and William Griffin of Corning; brother, John Derby of Brick, NJ; beloved grandchildren, Jake, James, Benjamin, Nicholas, Dylan, and Lucas; special friend Dwayne; along with other close friends and her favorite cat; Humphrey. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 10th at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning.

Memorial donations may be made in Laura’s name to the Salvation Army, 32 Denison Parkway East, Corning, NY 14830. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the nurses and care partners at Corning Guthrie Hospital, for their excellent care and compassion in Laura’s final days.
