Leah was born to George Edward Booker and Grace Rosa Woods of Raleigh, West Virginia on June 13, 1926. Leah attended Raleigh Public Schools and graduated from Stratton High School. She then pursued her education by attending Cosemology School in Columbus, Ohio where she met and married Carl Wallace Shoffner, Sr. Out of that union came three children: George Edward, Leah Dianne and Carl Wallace Jr. Upon dissolusion of the marriage Leah moved to West Virginia where she then met, fell in love and married Julius Fulton.
To this union Sonya Juliene and Adrian Keith were born. It was in wanting to improve from Glen Rogers, West Virginia to Norwalk, CT. The family was quite extensive and had grown from 5 children to the joining of six more children; Ben Roosevelt, Richard Careatha, Viola and Carl.
From the coal mining town to being called to preach, they stretch out for the north and upon arriving they settled in and found a church home in Norwalk. The family joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church where Leah was a musician and choir director.
Upon hearing the call, Julius answered, yes to the Lord summons to the pastorate. Together Julius and Leah with a band of Christian believers decided to organized Shiloh Baptist Church. At this time, not only did membership increase, the family increased as a new addition was added.
Tarey Lynn was born in April 1965. Leah was a “domestic engineer”, better known as a housewife. She dressed hair on the side.
Leah was known for her famous “croquignole” waves. On any given Saturday you could come to the house and smell fired hair. These hairdos would last for 2 weeks.
Leah loved music and taught her children and grands how to play the piano. Her favorite keys were Ab and Eb. As a result, her children are all musically inclined and her grands are musically gifted.
Leah loved children and she worked for Catholic family Services, which she served as a classroom aide. She then received her license to provide day care for children. At this juncture in her life she and Rev.
Fulton become one of the first foster parents for Casey Family Services. It was through this agency that they added to the family. A baby boy, Dennis Sherman completing the family with 7 children.
Leah was a kind-hearted person that was also a disciplinarian. She had a mean right-hand hook and could out punch, out throw and out shoot any man. She could handle her business.
Leah was an excellent cook and the neighborhood benefited from her culinary skills and motherly love. She was known as the “roll, crackling bread, and chopped bar-b-que lady”. Upon Rev Fulton’s retiring from Shiloh Baptist Church, Leah and Rev.
Fulton moved to Rocky Mount, VA in 1988. They joined Morning Star Baptist Church until Rev. Fulton assumed the pastorate at Bright Star.
After the passing of her husband, Leah joined Mountain View Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Kaven Smith and remained there until she moved to Bridgeport, CT with her daughter Sonya. Dianne, Tarey and George aided in the care of their mother.
We thank God for her trusted son-in-law Wayne Williams who made sure Leah wanted for nothing. We will miss “Leah”, “Mama”, “Grandma”, “Pookie Nunk”, “Sweet Pea”, “Mavis”, “Auntie” – greatly, but will carry her memories and sense of humor, love and generosity with our hearts. Her favorite saying when a love one has passed which kept us in a laughing mood: “Here lies the shell, the nut has passed away”.
Leah is predeceased by her husband, Rev. Julius Fulton, Brothers: Thomas (Buster), James (Bobby), three sisters Doris, Ruth and Naomi. She leaves to cherish her memories her children: George (Marge), Leah (Frank), Carl (Margaret), Sonya (Wayne), Pete, Tarey (Gerald), Dennis and a loving pet “Ginger”.
Her Siblings: Kenneth (Margaret), Wanda, Norman (Ernestine) and a loving sister Viola who was also her daughter,18 Grand Children, 27 Great Grands and a host of nieces and nephews (great), friends and a special church family and 2 special nieces Shayla and Shanteika. The Homegoing Celebration Service will be Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 1:00 PM, at Mountain View Baptist Church, with Pastor Kaven Smith Officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
Burial will be at Fulton Estate in Rocky Mount Va. To God be the Glory for the things He has done! Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
