Obituary for Leona Pennington Aug. 11, 1930 – June 14, 2018. With great sadness the family announces the passing of Leona on June 14, 2018, at the age of 87 years.

She was a 3rd generation resident of Live Oak and graduate of LOHS in 1948. She was very active in the community through Live Oak Lions Club, Live Oak Women’s Club, serving several years as president, and was a Sutter Co. Historical Society board member. She was instrumental in starting pilot classes for deaf children in Sutter Co. schools and has supported NorCal Services of Deaf in various ways.

At LOHS Leona was an editor for the school annual and was FFA Dance Queen in her senior year. As a young mother, she was a leader for Blue Birds and Camp Fire groups. Leona and Leroy managed duck hunting clubs in the Butte sink for over 50 years becoming well known by club members and those many people living in the vicinity.

She helped solve problems and was the “go to” person for information. They hosted the 1st Live Oak Lions Club Duck Dinner in the 1950’s which became an annual event and continues today. Leona leaves behind her 3 daughters, Jill Pennington and Marcie (Dennis) Turner of Live Oak, Elana (Jay) Varner of Turner, OR; grandchildren, Keriana Scribner of Gridley and Jeff Bloss of Jerome, ID; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce (Walt) Ross, brother, Kenneth (Louise) Neal, sister-in-law, Naomi Galbreath and many nieces and nephews.

Leona was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Leroy, her parents, Earl and Myrle Neal, and brother, Leonard Neal. Funeral arrangements are at Ullrey’s Funeral Home with viewing held Wednesday, June 20, 2018, 4 to 7 p.m. and funeral services at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 21st. Burial services at Live Oak cemetery.

A Celebration of Life at Live Oak Community Hall will follow. Suggested donations in Leona’s honor to Live Oak Lions Club, NorCal Deaf Services, Sutter Co. Museum or charity of your choice. Arrangements by Ullrey’s Funeral Home.
