Obituary for Lester “Les” Rose Lester “Les” Rose, of Mabank, TX, passed away July 11, 2018, at the age of 82. He was born August 13, 1935, in Wickes, AR, to Roy Lester and Rita Elizabeth (Hathaway) Rose. Les was one of nine children and lots of cousins who grew up in Wickes.
Growing up, Les was always musically inclined; specifically he enjoyed playing the guitar and stand-up bass. After Les graduated Wickes High School, he attended the Stamps Quartet School of Music in Dallas, TX. Les even had the privilege to play with Jim Reeves!
Les later joined the United States Army and served in the Third Armored Division in Germany during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged on June 4, 1958. Les’ love for music continued as he was a member of a military quartet playing country music.
The base commander so enjoyed the quartet’s music that he would allow them to stay in the commander’s quarters when he was travelling. We are forever grateful for his service. Les married the love of his life, Roberta Paterson, on March 21, 1960, and they settled in Culver City, CA.
They were married 49 years and they raised three children together: Tom, Pam and Rob. Les showed them a strong work ethic and common sense. He seemed to be a master of working on older cars and always had his steaming hot coffee next to him while doing so (even in the 100+° heat).
In order to provide for his family, Les worked as a mechanic and also did lots of maintenance work. One of the perks of working in maintenance for Frito Lay was all the chips he could eat! When his children married and had children of their own, Les got a new name, “Papaw”.
Once, he delighted his grandchildren to no end after “eating” a play-doh cookie that they had made for him. He also enjoyed pranking them when they we’re being extra unruly by sticking out his false teeth and watching them run off in fits of laughter. Les loved his family and enjoyed being with them.
He will be missed tremendously. Les was a creature of habit. Every morning he’d go to the local gas station to get his sausage biscuit and a newspaper to read with his cup of coffee at home.
He had his favorite places to eat too… Bean and Burger and McClain’s in the Cedar Creek Lake area. He enjoyed watching The Gaithers and Jimmy Swaggart in his favorite spot on the couch and listening to Southern Gospel music. One thing you always knew, Les was watching was his Texas Rangers!
He loved his Rangers and let’s just say baseball season is not long enough. Les was a man of faith and a member of Tool Praise & Worship Center in Tool, TX. It is his faith that provides comfort to those who knew him that he is with the Lord.
Les joins wife: Roberta Rose; parents: Roy Lester Rose and Rita Elizabeth (Hathaway) Rose; and siblings: Dale Thomas Rose, Elsie Ellen (Rose) Evans, Mary (Irene) Rose Milam and Roy Raymond Rose. His life will continue to be remembered and celebrated by his loving children: Tom Rose and wife Michele of Plano, TX, Pam Allison and husband Joe of Litchfield Park, AZ, and Rob Rose and wife Candy of Royse City, TX; 13 grandchildren: Chris Payne, Aaron Rose, Josh Payne, Stephanie Massegee, TJ Rose, Brandi (Baker) Burton, Mitch Baker, Leslie Rose, Jake Abreu, Adam Abreu, Adam Allison, Ashley Allison and Ashton Allison; 18 great grandchildren; siblings; Janice Rose, Alice (Rose) McKenzie and husband Milton, Doris (Rose) Harp and husband Mervyn and Norman Rose and wife Nancy; and close friends: B.D.
