LUCY NELSON Lucy A. Nelson, 96, of Quincy, passed away at 7:28 a.m. Sunday (December 23, 2018) at St. Vincent’s Home. Born January 30, 1922 in Quincy, Lucy was the daughter of Russell and Margaret Shackleton Haerle. She married William F. Nelson on December 2, 1943 in Quincy.

He preceded her in death on August 6, 2006. Mrs. Nelson served her country in the U. S. Navy during WW II. She had the distinction of being the first Navy Wave from Quincy.

Lucy was a longtime member of Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Adams County Home Extension and served for many years as a Republican Election Judge in Adams County. She loved to sew and became very accomplished with her skills. Lucy also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and playing cards with family and friends.

Lucy had a heart for animals and loved caring for her many pet dogs and cats over the years. Lucy was a graduate of Gem City Business College and had been employed as a switchboard operator at Blessing Hospital for 10 years and then with her son in his business, Triple R Machine Shop for many years until her retirement. Survivors include two sons, Steve Nelson (Renee) of Quincy and John Nelson (Burnetta) of Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters, Vanessa Nelson of Chicago, IL and Olivia Nelson of Leiden, The Netherlands; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and two brothers, John Haerle and Charles “Chuck” Haerle. Cremation arrangements are in the care of the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Memorial graveside services with Military Honors by the Bear Creek American Legion Post 823 and the U. S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail will be held Saturday morning (December 29, 2018) at 11:15 in Greenmount Cemetery with Pastor Ron Cox officiating.

Memorial visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy. Memorials may be made to Ellington Presbyterian Church or St. Vincent’s Home.
