Obituary for Lula Burnetta Jefcoat Hilbun Lula Burnetta Jefcoat Hilbun, 95, died Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, MS. Funeral Services will be at Memory Chapel with visitation at 1:00 p.m. and funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8. Burial will be at Big Creek Cemetery.
Dr. John Adams will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tory Bass, Adam Clark, David Daughdrill, Mark Dyess, Brad Payne, and Gabe Windham. She was born March 4, 1923 in Soso, Mississippi, the youngest of nine children.
Lived her entire life in Jones County, dedicated to making a better life for her family and friends She was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-three years, James Steven Hilbun and her father, Joel Pinkney Jefcoat, her mother, Julia Ann Todd Jefcoat, her grandson Thomas Kevin Bass, six brothers, Arnold, Arlie, Harl, Bill, Pete, and Glaston Jefcoat and two sisters, Mary Jefcoat Riley, and Ethel Jefcoat Young. She is survived by her only child, Janet Hilbun Rosa; son-in-law Robert Rosa; seven grandchildren, Stephanie and David Daughdrill, Janna and Mark Dyess, Heather Bass, Jill and Gabe Windham, Tory and Amy Bass, Angela and Brad Payne, Amber and Adam Clark; eighteen great grandchildren, Drew and Julia Daughdrill, Marley, Sophie, and Jack Hoover, Morgan and Ethan Dyess, Haley, Allie, and Brady Richards, Danny Windham, Abby and Samuel Bass, Rosa Kate, Annabella and Hayes Payne, Ryder Walters and Blythe Clark, and one great great grandchild, Gracelyn Dyess; very dear friends, Carol Cummings and Kathy Pearson, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Burnetta was a lifelong member of Big Creek Baptist Church and resided in the Big Creek Community.
She alongside her husband were pioneers in the poultry industry, and were a vital factor bringing the poultry industry into Laurel and the Jones County area. They began processing chickens in a very small plant near their home in the Big Creek Community in 1945. They processed and delivered fresh chicken to local grocery stores.
They soon located Hilbun Poultry Company in Laurel. After more than twenty years, they sold their business to Wayne Farms, a division of Continental Grain. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Comfort Care Nursing Home who cared for her the last years of her life.
