Obituary for Lula Hensley Thompson Lula “Tootsie” Hensley Thompson, 91, of Bassett, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018, at her residence. She was born February 4, 1927 in Patrick County, Virginia, to the late James Auscho Hensley and Ivory May Bowman Hensley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Rouse Thompson; son, James Michael Thompson; and two brothers, William Clyde Hensley and Leonard Douglas Hensley.

Lula was Senior Citizen of the Year of the Western North Carolina Division of the International Church of God in 1995; she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years, and was a member of the Mt. Airy Church of God for 54 years. At the time of her retirement, she was the Department Head of Soil and Mending at Cross Creek Textiles.

In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, sewing and gardening. Mrs. Thompson is survived by four loving godchildren, Jeremiah Johnson, Lauren Michelle King, Stephen Blake King, and James Anthony “Jimmy” Wright; three sisters, Betty H. Wright, Mary H. Stump, and Rachel H. Ross; three brothers, James Clinton Hensley, Robert Henry Hensley, and Thomas “Tom” Hensley; brother-in-law, Samuel Thompson; sister-in-law, Mary Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Wright Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Arlene Campbell, Pastor Robert Hilburn, and Donald Whitchard officiating.

Burial will follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park, Spencer, Virginia. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. Memorials may be made to Generation 4 Hope, P. O. Box 45, Stoneville, North Carolina 27048.
