On Monday, March 25, 2019, her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, took his dedicated, true and faithful servant, Maggie “Etta” Jennings to her eternal home. Born in the Keeling area of Pittsylvania County on June 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Obie Thomas Jennings and Rosie Etta Puckett Jennings. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret J. Lunsford and husband, Harvey Lunsford of Yanceyville, NC, and four brothers, Charlie Thomas Jennings and wife Bernice of Danville; Matthew Irby Jennings and wife, Pattie of Danville; Robert Jennings and wife, Janet, of Baltimore, MD; and Clarie Henry Jennings and wife, Lucy, of Florida.

Ms. Jennings was a loved and faithful member of Old Mill Church and Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church for many decades. She was inspired to pursue nursing during WWII and received her training at Danville Memorial Hospital’s Nursing Program as a member of the Cadet Nurses Corps. After becoming a Registered Nurse and serving as a surgical nurse in Miami, she returned to the operating room at Danville Memorial Hospital in 1954 and retired as its coordinator of surgical operations in 1990.

Her formal nursing career spanned 45 years, but she provided care to four generations of her own family. She “always believed that to spend your life serving other people is the most rewarding thing anybody can do”. Ms. Jennings will long be remembered for her grace and dedication to her church, family, and profession.

Ms. Jennings is survived by sister Hattie J. Graham (husband Hoyt, deceased) of Richmond, VA and loving and caring nieces and nephews, Donald Jennings and wife, Sharon; William Jennings and wife, Chris; Katherine J. Emerson and husband, Earl, Jr.; Robert Thomas Jennings and wife, Barbara; Thomas Jennings and wife, Nancy; Linda J. Hawes and husband, Rusty; Donna G. Stanley and husband, Dale; Patricia G. Finestone and husband, David Bradley; and Marsha G. Hallinan and husband, Richard. She is also survived by many loving great nieces and nephews, and some great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Dan Parker officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, March 29, 2019, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, 703 N. Main Street, Danville, and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family wishes to extend their grateful appreciation to Ms. Jennings’s caregivers, Ray and Jeannie Walley and others, and to the staff of Roman Eagle Health and Rehab for their loving and compassionate care over the last several years.
