Maia Jr. “Loving brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather” Mr. Manuel (Manny) J. Maia, Jr., 81, of Waterbury, CT died Monday, March 11, 2019, surrounded by family, after a lengthy illness. Manny was born in East Carver, MA on January 19, 1938, son of the late Manuel and Josephine (Gomes) Maia. He graduated from Leavenworth High School and Waterbury State Tech College with an Associate’s Degree in Data Processing.
He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper and he was stationed in Lebanon. He worked in telemarketing for Action Windows in Newington until he retired in 2002. He was an amateur golden glove division boxer and an avid baseball player.
He played in the Twi-Met League as well as on the Jim Spann Laurels. He coached baseball for the Pearl Street Twi-Met League, Sandy Koufax, St Lucy’s Grammar School and Post College. He was inducted into the Boy’s Club Hall of Fame.
Manny was a talented vocalist having sung with the Marcon’s and the Four Kings. Manny loved fishing and he was a communicant of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Manny is survived by 2 sons, Manuel (Andre) Maia of Decatur, Georgia and Derek Eugene Maia of Waterbury: 2 daughters, Nadine Gibson and her husband Allen of Stratford, Janine Lindsay and her husband Christopher of Snellville, GA; and Darlene Price of Lithonia, GA; 5 brothers, John “Pudgie” Maia and his wife Sheila of Waterbury, Maurice Maia and his wife Ann of Naugatuck, James “Jimmy” Maia and his wife Beverly, Ronald Maia and his wife Maritza all of Waterbury, and Francis “Frankie” Maia and his wife Sue of Southington; 3 sisters, Dian Morales and her husband PR of New York City, Nadine Grubbs and her husband EJ and Linda Arrington and her husband Daniel both of Waterbury; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements: Funeral Saturday 12 noon from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home 430 Chase Parkway Waterbury to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 P.M. Cremation will follow and burial of cremains will be private and at the convenience of the family.
