Margaret’s Obituary Margaret Allene Rivers Perkins was born on November 4th, 1950 to the late Ike Rivers and Lillian Rowlett Rivers of Waterloo, Alabama. She was the fourth child born to this union. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother John Chester (J.C.) Rivers.

Margaret Perkins made her transition from this life on February 3rd, 2019 surrounded by her beloved family. She went home to be with her “Baby Doll”, Pastor Frederick Webster Perkins, Jr. Margaret was a precocious child growing up in Waterloo, Al. with very specific and independent ideas.

She often recounted memories that demonstrated her independent spirit. The daughter of a Minister. Margaret professed her faith at an early age at Stephens Chapel CME Church under the Pastorage of Reverend Truelove.

She attended West End School where she was the valedictorian of her class. When the family moved to Florence, she joined Tennessee Valley Community Church where she served faithfully in many capacities and auxiliaries: Women’s Christian Service, Sunday School, Usher Board, Altar Ladies, and several choirs. She was a true keeper of the house of the Lord.

Often making sure the sanctuary and lower level of the Church was maintained in a pristine manner. She served faithfully and humbly beside Pastor Perkins to minister to the needs of the church body. A stalwart worker for Christ.

Margaret extended herself to help others locally and throughout the State through the Alabama Area Council of Community and Independent Churches. She was an active member of the International Council of Community Churches (ICCC) Margaret loved her family. She shared her love and caring freely with others within the community.

She worked for many years at the West Irvine Market. She was well known for her courtesy and kindness to the children of the “West Side”. She worked for a number of years at Tee Jays Manufacturing.

She retired for a brief period of time. Anyone familiar with Margaret knew she was a hard worker and supportive mother. So when asked, she gladly came out retirement to work diligently with “her babies” at Handy Head Start.

She was an unofficial mother and grandmother to many. She was affectionately referred to by her children and grandchildren as “Gung Gung”. Margaret cared for, loved, cherished, and protected her “babies”.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted daughter, LaShun Rutland (Donald) Florence, AL; David Perkins of Alpharetta Georgia and Frederick Perkins III of Florence, AL. (Step sons); Berry “G” Coleman of Chicago, Il. (Adopted son); her sisters Dora “Bernice” Johnson of San Bernardino, CA.

and Vivian “Cookie” Poole (Jim ) Florence, AL; and grandchildren Dante Rutland, Tyela Rutland, De’ja Rutland, Frederick Coman, Kori Herron, and Aryn Herron along with a host of loving friends.
