OBITUARY Maria (Derezycki) Zelez May 10, 1935 – September 26, 2018 Maria (Derezycki) Zelez, 83, beloved wife of the late Myron Zelez, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Maria was born in Perevoloka, Ukraine shortly before WWII on May 10, 1935, to the late Ilko and Sofia (Nepip) Derezycki. At a young age, she and her parents were forced to leave a war torn Ukraine.

Sadly they were separated and forced to earn their keep on farms in Germany. When the war ended, Maria with her parents, were given a new opportunity to start life over in the United States in 1949. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Myron, who was unknowingly by her side during her whole journey to freedom.

Together they enjoyed a simple life, raising their five children to carry on the traditions of their Ukrainian culture. Maria faithfully attended St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church of Hartford, and often reminisced about her experiences as a member of the Children of Mary. She was actively involved with many Ukrainian community events and clubs, especially the Women’s Organization for the Defense of the Four Freedoms of Ukraine and the Ukrainian American Youth Association.

She will be dearly missed by her five devoted children, Lew Zelez and Roman Zelez, both of Rocky Hill, Daria Budas and her husband Orest of Wethersfield, Peter Zelez and his wife Luba of Glastonbury and Genia Stelmach and her husband Ihor of South Windsor and Baba to her seven adored grandchildren, Maria, Frances, and L.J. Zelez, Laryssa and Adrian Budas, and Andrea and Alexander Zelez. Maria was predeceased by her sister Kateryna Pawliv, in Ukraine, and her brother Yosofat Derezycki who was lost during the war. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday at 10 am at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 Wethersfield Ave.

, Hartford, CT 06114. Everyone is invited to go directly to the church. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Glastonbury.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4:30 – 7:30 pm, with a Panachyda service at 7:15 pm at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd. , Wethersfield. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church (see address above) or the Ukrainian American Youth Association, 961 Wethersfield Ave.
