Marie’s Obituary Marie Elizabeth (Sawyer) Barfknecht, 92 years old, of Rhinelander, WI passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 10, 2019, surrounded by loved ones at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah, WI, following injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident. Marie was born on September 24, 1926, and was raised in Rhinelander, WI. She was the second child of the late Bert and Bertha Sawyer.

Marie and her three siblings attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from Rhinelander High School. On August 23, 1947, Marie married the love of her life, Don Barfknecht. During her lifetime, Marie worked at Wisconsin Public Service, Rhinelander Appliance Center, WXPR, and the Commission on Aging.

Marie’s main career, however, was being a homemaker, raising seven children and nourishing all those around her with faith and love. Marie spent much of her time volunteering for Nativity of Our Lord Parish, and in the Rhinelander Community. She was passionate about reading, writing, and praying her grandchildren into shape.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister; Dottie Ann (Sawyer) Secord. Left to honor and remember Marie, are her brothers; Fr. Michael Sawyer O.S.B. and Robert Sawyer, her children; Fr.

David Barfknecht O.S.B., Jane (Stephen) Buch, Dan (Ann) Barfknecht, Judy (Tim) Kuehn, Mary (Mike) Mangerson, Dona (John) Potters and Paula (Dave) Schneider, twenty grandchildren and twenty-nine (and counting) great-grandchildren. Family, friends, and others whose lives have been touched by Marie are invited to a visitation on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at the Hildebrand Funeral Home, (24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander) from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service to begin at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 21, 2019, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish located at the corner of Conro and King Street, Rhinelander at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) with visitation at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the mass. The family has set up memorials in Marie’s name for two of her favorite community services: Prolife New Dawn Pregnancy Re Center and the Rhinelander Public Library.
