Obituary for Marilyn Mullen (Scalise) Marilyn J. Mullen, age 68, of Rome, passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2018, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Marilyn was born in Rome on May 7, 1950 to John and Marilyn Hoyt Scalise. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1968.

On May 26, 1972, she was united in marriage to Duane Mullen. From 1978 to 1996, she worked at Revere Copper Products as Paymaster. Marilyn worked in the family business Grey Barn Antiques side by side with Duane for well over 25 years.

Most recently, Marilyn worked as Office Assistant in her son’s practice Empire Orthopedic Labs, Yorkville, from 2009 until her recent illness. Marilyn was a member of Resurrection Life Church, Rome. Marilyn was especially proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.

She never missed her grandchildren’s swim meets, soccer and lacrosse games, piano and dance recitals, school and church plays, and band concerts-even throughout her illness. Marilyn was an exquisite home decorator and gardener, but she despised cooking and baking. In fact, when Duane would ask her what she planned to start for dinner- Marilyn’s reply was “the car”.

Both of them enjoyed eating lunch and dinner out, especially at The Franklin Hotel in Rome. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Duane; her mother, Marilyn; a daughter and son in law, Amber and Riccardo Ripa of New Hartford; a son and daughter in law, Joshua and Danielle (Paquette) Mullen of Rome; grandchildren, Amelio and Mateo Ripa, and Lydia, Daniel, and Lucie Mullen; two brothers, Jack Scalise of Rome, and Anthony Scalise and his partner William Martin of Whitesboro; a sister and brother in law, Donna and Russell Burch of Rome; a sister in law, Joanne Mullen; brothers in law and sisters in law, Dennis and Sue Mullen of Ava, and Darrin and Dawn Mullen of Blossvale; a special aunt, Darlene (David) Ingalls of Hartwick Seminary; and several nieces and nephews. Marilyn was predeceased by her father, John; her father-in-law, Donald Mullen; and mothers-in-law, Delores Mullen and Gail Mullen.
