Mark Knobbe, age 96, died of complications of Parkinson’s Disease on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Accura Healthcare of Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2019 at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr.

Shinoj Jose. Music will be by Kate Cuddy, and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lectors will be John Venner, and Mark Reiter.

Gift Bearers will be Joe DeLong, Katie Knobbe, Jacob Venner, and Dan Reiter. Eucharistic Ministers will be Tom Venner, Lorene Knobbe, and Ruth Feldmann. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Mark’s grandchildren: Joseph DeLong, David DeLong, Steven DeLong, James Knobbe, John Venner, Jacob Venner, Katie Knobbe, Blake Knobbe, Mark Reiter, and Dan Reiter.

Casket Bearers will be Russ Knobbe, Craig Knobbe, Bill Knobbe, Ken Knobbe, Mark Hoffman, Tim Schulte, and Don Rowe. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home on Sunday after 2 p.m. There will be a Rosary prayed at 3 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 5 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Monday morning, where visitation will resume at 9 a.m., and continue until 9:45 a.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church to be directed to St. Lawrence Church. Mark was born at Breda, Iowa. He attended St. Bernard Grade School and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1939. He attended one and one-half years of university at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps to serve in WWII.

After schooling at the Air Force Base in Courtland, Alabama, he taught instrument flying to Air Force Cadets by means of a Link Trainer. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force on February 27, 1946 with a rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his return to Iowa, Mark continued farming with his family.

On April 21, 1949, Mark married Mae Derner at St. Bernard Church, Breda, Iowa with the Reverand E. L Schleyer celebrant. In 1950 Mark and Mae moved to a farm near Auburn, Iowa where he engaged in both livestock and grain farming for 35 years. During this period Mark served as a Director of the Lake City Coop.

He served on the St. Bernard School Board where all of their children attended. He was also a member of the Breda American Legion. In 1985 Mark and Mae retired and moved to their home in Carroll, Iowa.

Mark was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, its Mens Club and Funeral Choir. In retirement, Mark enjoyed golfing, woodworking, playing cards, travelling, singing at nursing homes, reading and, last but not least, spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Mae, of Carroll and his five children: Jean and her husband Tom DeLong of Dayton, OH; Dr. Tom Knobbe of Cincinnati, Ohio; Julie and her husband Tom Venner of Boone, Iowa; Tony Knobbe and his wife Lorene of Davenport, Iowa and Nora and her husband Terry Reiter of Davenport Iowa.

Mark is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mark is survived by sisters Joan Heiman, Lucy Wolterman, Ruth Feldmann and her husband Tom of Jefferson, Iowa, Barbara McCabe of New Hampton, Iowa, Karen Eason and husband Frank of Morton, Illinois and in-laws Edna Knobbe, Virginia Knobbe, Eileen Bruning, Eugene and Vera Derner, Ione Schloegel, Annette Ratigan, Jim and Lollie Derner and Don and Peggy Derner, and Deb Derner. Mark is also survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rose Knobbe, siblings: Felicitas Polking ; Mary Ann McGillicuddy; Linus Knobbe; Mello Knobbe; Raphael Knobbe; Rita and Larry Tompkins as well as in-laws Marcell Polking, Daniel McGillicuddy, Ed Heiman, Eugene Schwarzkopf, Irma Knobbe, Joe Wolterman, Larry Tompkins, Tom McCabe, Zeta and Ray Glass, Glenn Bruning, Collett and Bob Meyers, Frank Schloegel, Bob Ratigan and Bill Derner.
