MARTHA J. SMITH Martha J. Smith, 82, of Quincy, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Saturday (January 5, 2019) in Blessing Hospital. Born August 20, 1936 in Springfield, Illinois, Martha was the daughter of James and Erma Hedrick Boyer. She married Wilbur H. Smith in May, 1956 in Quincy.

He preceded her in death on June 8, 2017. Martha was a longtime member of Bethel Assembly of God Church where she was active with the Joy Fellowship Group and enjoyed volunteering in the nursery. She loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables, cooking and canning her fruits and vegetables and was known for her homemade Apple Butter.

Martha was devoted to her family. She enjoyed taking walks with her sister, Wilma, and cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Martha worked as a C.N.A. for over 40 years.

She was employed at St. Mary Hospital for over 20 years, then worked at various local nursing homes until retiring from Good Samaritan Home in 1998. Survivors include three sons, Michael Smith (Judith) of Quincy, Wilbur E. Smith Jr.(Denise) of Fremont, Nebraska and Robert L.”Bob” Smith (Lori) of Freemont Nebraska;. six grandchildren, Wil Smith Jr., Melissa Smith, Kelsey Smith, Drew Smith, Tyler Smith and Shannon Smith; her loving great grandchildren; three brothers, Johnnie Boyer, David Boyer and Roger Boyer; three sisters, Thelma Schmalshof, Ruby Van Loock and Lucille Plunk ;and several nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Harold Boyer and Jim Boyer; and five sisters, Wilma Piner, Mary Dabney, Roslie Diekers, Beulah Anne Boyer and Linda Lou Boyer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Todd Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Wednesday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bethel Assembly of God Building Fund.
