Mary Britz Schlick, 62, of Wheaton, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born August 15th, 1956, in Evergreen Park, IL, she received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and her Master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University. After graduation, she worked at St. Joseph Catholic School in Downers Grove.

Since 2001, she was a dedicated special education teacher at Washington Elementary School in Wheaton, and continued working up until ten days before she died. Mary contributed much to the Washington School community beyond her teaching – she was always quick to volunteer for events and activities. According to her colleagues, Mary was kind and always thought the best of everyone.

Mary was not just a teacher who supported students who had special needs; she was a special education teacher at her core. It was who she was, and it was her goal to help every child with special needs succeed. Mary is survived by her husband of 36 years, Fred J. Schlick, her two sons, Dr. Conor P. Schlick of Washington, DC, and Dr. Brian D. Schlick of Nashville, TN.

She was a devoted sister to Robert (Mary Anne) Britz, Nancy (Richard) Kreis, Katie (John) Zwers, and Joe Britz, fond aunt and great aunt to many nieces and nephews, and beloved cat-mom to Erwin and Milton. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 26th, 2019, at 9am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave. , Wheaton, IL.
