Maura Hufford , February 28, 1952 — July 11, 2018

Maura McDonough Hufford, widow of David R Hufford, daughter of John and Elizabeth McDonough, sister of J Riley Mcdonough, Molly M. Gaertner, and Brian McDonough, and devoted mother to Kaitlin Hufford entered her eternal rest on July 11, 2018, less than 12 weeks after the passing of her husband of 36 years. She was surrounded by family and friends and passed quietly at Presence St Joseph’s Hospital having suffered cardiac arrest, the result of a broken heart from which she did not awaken. Originally from Buffalo, New York, it was there that Maura met the love of her life Dave.

Together they moved to Tampa, Florida, where her daughter Katie was born. It was Joliet, Illinois however that became home for the Huffords. The party was always at their house.

Maura enjoyed life and her dry wit and laughter was the life of the party. She was frequently seen holding court, martini in hand, long colorful stories under way. Independent and sometimes stubborn, Maura did things her way and once her mind was set it was not easily moved.

Still, when you were her friend, you remained her friend for life. She was loyal and true no matter what the years brought. Beneath that seemingly unflappable exterior Maura was sensitive and vulnerable.

Her daughter Katie was the apple of her eye. When speaking to others about Katie, she could do no wrong. When it came to her husband Dave, she was in charge, or so she wanted all to believe.

Behind the scenes though, he remained her knight in shining armor. His passing left a hole that could not be filled, and she was never the same without him. We take comfort that she is once again by his side.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 13, 2018 at 12 p.m. at the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. As per Maura’s wishes cremation rights will be accorded and a private burial will take place at a later date.
