William Schmidt , a 4th generation Joliet native, passed away on July 10th, just shy of his 94th birthday. He was born on August 12, 1924. He was a star athlete for Joliet Township High School, class of 1942, active in baseball, basketball, football and track.

He served during WW 2 in the 101st division of the army as a paratrooper, achieving Non-commissioned officer status. William, mostly known as Bill or Wimpy, was a partner in the family business, Joliet Floral Company, and remained there until the business was sold. He loved working with flowers and plants, always keeping busy in the greenhouses at work, and in his own gardens.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Anne Marie Schmidt, and by his parents Fred and Florence, and brother Frederick. He is survived by three daughters, Cheryl (Paul) Reid, Denice Schmidt and Billie (Robert) Ronna, and sister Mynne “Sis” Schmidt. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Christine (Jim) Crichton, Christine (Tim) Hayes, Aura Wynne, Kelly (Daniel) Galinsky and Craig Ronna, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Everyone who met Bill loved him, and he had many friends over his many years. He loved sports, gardening and his family. He participated for many years in area softball, basketball, bowling, golf and euchre leagues and was a member of Stone City Post VFW, Mattson Lodge #175, A.F. & A.M., and Grace United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday 3-6 p.m. Interment Elmhurst Cemetery.
