Maxine Waid, age 93, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Lawton. She was born April 26, 1925 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Clyde Nathaniel and Toye Adylene Hunter. She grew up in Oklahoma City and was a graduate of Capitol Hill High School.
Maxine excelled in piano playing at a young age and accompanied the church services at her home church, Wilmont Place Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, in her youth. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Oklahoma Baptist University. While in college she sang and toured in a women’s quartet.
This quartet was the first group of ladies to sing with the men’s Bison Glee Club. She also accompanied voice students during their lessons while at OBU. She married M.E. “Cuffie” Waid, Jr. on February 28, 1947 in Oklahoma City.
He preceded her in death on June 5, 2008. The couple moved to Chicago following their marriage so Mr. Waid could attend optometry school and she helped support the couple as a secretary in the petroleum industry and by teaching piano lessons. They moved to Lawton in 1950 where she became secretary to the pastor of First Baptist Church.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, the First Baptist Church Choir, and spent many years singing on The Living Christmas Tree. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines, where she sang, toured, and competed in a quartet, a member of Entre Nous and enjoyed playing with her Bridge club. Maxine also helped her husband as a bookkeeper in his optometry practice.
She played Aunt Eller in the musical Oklahoma in 1982 in celebration of Oklahoma’s Diamond Jubilee presented at Cameron University. She is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Jennifer Leigh Head and husband Dr. Robert Head, Lawton, Brenda Dawn Brewster and husband Dwain, Elgin, and Kimberly Kaye Guinn and husband, Todd; four grandchildren, Dr. Kristina Flint and husband Rocky, Dr. Kyle Robert Head and wife Sarah, Stephan Nicholas Guinn and wife Loren and Deborah Kelsey Arias and husband Josh; five great grandchildren, Addyson Leigh Flint, Alllyson Lane Flint, Annyson Lynn Flint, Kennedy Pearl Head and Karson Radley Head; her brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Dorothy Hunter, Oklahoma City and her sister, Sherel Boydston, Lawton. Her daughter, Debra Sue Waid, preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Staton Elementary music department, 1700 Sageberry Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89144. This is where her daughter, Kim, teaches music.
