Michael Charles Stanchin Jr., 74 years old, passed away at 9:32 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at his home. Mike was born on June 19, 1943, in Uniontown, PA, to the late Michael C. and Ethel (Oglethorpe) Stanchin. He has lived in South Bend since 1973, while residing in Lakeville for the past five years.

On July 14, 1967, in South Bend, Michael and Susan K. Kristowski were united in marriage. Along with his loving wife, Susan, Michael is survived by their five daughters, Jennifer (Stephen) Wright of Surprise, AZ; Melissa (Shawn) Whiteman of Dimondale, MI; Amy (Michael) Kanarios of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Sarah Stanchin of Ft. Wayne; and Rebecca (Raymond) Hancart of Copley, OH; fifteen grandchildren, Olivia, Paige, Madeline, Hannah, Reece, Katelyn, Connor, Kellen, Taylor, Jay, Quinn, Gabriel, Samantha, Ryan, and Charles; two sisters, Mary Louise (Charles) Yarris and Kathy (Ron) Brant, both of Uniontown, PA; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his four-legged friend, Sampson.

Mike grew up in Uniontown, PA, where he “walked to school uphill both ways (no really! )” attending St. John’s Evangelical Roman Catholic School. After graduating from high school, he earned degrees from DeVry Institute of Technology and Wright Junior College in Chicago.

Mike served in the Illinois National Guard from 1967-1972, most notably during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It was in Chicago where he met his wife Susan and his four oldest daughters were born. After moving to South Bend, his youngest daughter was born and he became the owner of Great Lakes Windows.

Mike enjoyed outdoor activities including playing catch with his dogs Gunner Boy and Sampson, golfing as part of the Erskine early morning golfers, boating, and tennis; and spoiling all 15 of his grandchildren with pontoon rides and Oreos. He spent his remaining free time cheering on the Fighting Irish, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago Bears. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
