Michael James McCreary November 23,1951 – January 19,2019 It is with great sadness that I must communicate with you that Michael died on January 19, 2019. He was just 1-month post a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis. If you knew him well, you know he was a street guy, a tough guy that grew up in Warren on Homewood Avenue.
The neighborhood kids though were the best of friends and found their way into mischief and lots of fun and play together, walks to Cicero’s, though only staying out just until the street lights came on. Michael’s proudest moments were his prowess as an athlete and Warren G. Harding Panther, class of 1969. He excelled at every aspect of sports – and was a 3-season athlete in football, wrestling, and shotput.
His highest achievement was being named All-Ohio Center and Middle Linebacker in 1968. Numerous awards and recognition followed during his senior year. He was always up for a physical test and would challenge both teammates and coaches to weight lifting and other contests.
He was undefeated in “the pits”. Michael’s football career continued with a full scholarship to Findlay College. Though Michael’s family was small, he was an only child, Michael and his parents shared a very close relationship, particularly with his dad, Edwin, his aunt Mary Ellen and Uncle Dave, and his cousin Cookie, who Michael always said, “got him”.
Michael made his parents most proud when he joined the Austintown Police Department – a natural fit. He was a first responder long before it was cool or appreciated. He loved helping others and loved the camaraderie of his Brothers in Blue.
He enjoyed answering 911 calls and situations which he could quell physically if necessary due to his years of body building and fitness. He survived 3 shootouts during his tenure in what he termed the “domestic wars”. He cultivated deep friendships with his partner, Don Corbett, colleague Bob Graham, and fellow bartenders at Lefty and Jim’s David Brown and John Ledgerwood- which have spanned all these years.
Since his move to Indiana, Michael had a close friend in Guy Leng, a fellow Notre Dame usher. True to his Irish roots, he could tell a great story. His command for detail only added to his delight in sharing stories with others.
A true child of the ‘60’s he loved Motown and dancing, and like all of us, knew all the words by heart. After several years together and apart, we came to learn that we were so much better together. He always introduced me as the “love of his life”.
A title I relish. I feel fortunate to have been the recipient of his love and to share his life. Private services were held.
