Michael’s Obituary It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Herrera announces his passing after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family on January 22, 2019, at age 81. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia (Reid) Herrera; three children, Felicia (Jeff) Wells, Michele Herrera, Michael (Stephanie) Herrera; seven grandchildren, Blake, Catherine, Noah, Drew, Michael, Mia, and Elle, one nephews Michael R. Herrera and one niece Ti Albritton. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Herrera and his cousin David Rasines.

Born November 13, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to Jesus and Pilar (Iglesias) Herrera, Michael graduated from Milford Prep, Connecticut in 1955 and went on to attend West Virginia Wesleyan on a scholarship. Michael earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Florida State and taught as an assistant professor at Syracuse University’s Graduate School of Social Work. Michael then opened his own social work private practice in North Syracuse, where he helped many people for thirty years.

He was appointed as the Commissioner of Mental Health for Oswego County and later became the Director of Mental Health Services for Oswego Hospital until his retirement in 2013. A well-respected professional with the utmost integrity, Michael’s kind, caring, and gentle ways were a service to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his listening skills and the unconditional love he always demonstrated to family and friends.

Michael enjoyed spending time with his family; especially beach vacations, golfing, racquetball, tennis, and his many beloved dogs. Calling hours will be 1-3PM Saturday January 26 at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
