Mother Ena Higmon Hurdle July 07, 1928 – March 13, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Ena Higmon Raimer Hurdle entered this world one of a set of twin girls on July 7, 1928 in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Ena was the daughter of the late Caroline Turnbull Henley and Monroe Raimer. Ena spent her early years and was educated in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and was very active in sports.

She met a young service man in the Navy, Hubert Alexander Hurdle (deceased) and the two were married. The couple migrated to New York City and lived with Ena’s older sister Lee. In 1954, the two purchased a home in Jamaica, New York, and resided in Queens till the time of her passing.

As a result of this union three children were born, Eugene Hurdle (deceased), Lee Almond, and Rudy Hurdle. Ena’s twin sister Elaine also came to reside in Queens and the two shared an unbreakable lifetime connection and bond. Ena Hurdle was an employee of the City of New York in the Custodial Department and worked her way up over the years to supervisor.

She loved working and was a nononsense person who took her job very seriously. She was employed at City Hall for over 40 years and worked under the administration of Mayor Ed Koch and Mayor David Dinkins. She was affectionately known to her family as “Ma”, “Nana”, “Auntie Ena” and “Tantina”.

Ena was an outgoing person, strong willed, very feisty and would tell you like it is and didn’t hold back. At the same time, she loved her family and would do anything in her power for them. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite times to cook enormous meals for her family and neighbors, everyone loved her “red rice with chicken”.

She also loved to read and to watch her favorite baseball team, “The Mets”. In her later years, Ena Hurdle began attending The Revelation Church of the Lord Jesus Christ with her daughter and grandchildren. On December 27, 2015, she was baptized in Jesus’ name at the age of 87 and received Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

Mother Hurdle could be seen in her spot on Sundays in her beautiful suits and hats; and although she was in a wheelchair, she would still be singing and praising God. She will be missed by her Revelation and Redemption Church families. Mother Hurdle and her twin Elaine Henderson came into this world together, and connected in life and even unto death they have passed on into eternity together.

Ena was preceded in death by one brother, Eldridge Emmanuel; three sisters, Alice Lennard, Amanda, and Leoneale Rabsatt; one son, Eugene Hurdle; and one son-in-law, Benjamin Almond. She will be missed by one daughter, Lee Almond; one son, Rudy Hurdle; daughter-in-law, Thelma Hurdle; nieces, Cora, Stephanie, and Juliet; nephews, James and Godfrey; grandchildren, Temple, Marlon, JaNette, Shamekia, Naquasia, Connie, Chaki, Jequan, Rudy Jr., Antonio, Tony, Danelle, Towana, Ena, Eugene Jr., and Uneice; grand nieces, Tamika, Nicole, and Shanelle; grandnephew, Kaheem; great grandchildren, JaNeece, JaNasia, Keefe, Ayodele, Octavia, Xavier, Daryanna, and Tiarra; and a host of other grands, great grands, family, and church family.
