Brady passed away at the age of 86 in St. Petersburg, FL surrounding by his loving family. He was born to parents Bernard and Madeline (Alderdice) Brady on July 14, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. Patrick graduated from Parker High School where he was an avid participant of athletics including captain of the football team.
He then moved on to Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin where he again played football and received a B.A. degree. He also received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas. He attended Harvard University where he completed the Health Systems Management program.
He married his Carol Dowd in Chicago on May 7, 1960. He was the loving father to two sons, Mark (Christine) Brady and Craig (Betsy) Brady. And loving grandfather to Matthew, Ryan and Lucy Brady; fond brother to Bernard (Rita) Brady and Jack (Marsha) Brady.
He spent his career in public and health care administration. He held positions within the City government of Kansas City, Missouri – including Finance Director and Assistant City Manager. He then moved into public health care as the Associate Executive Director and acting Executive Director of Truman Medial Center.
In 1980, he became Executive Director of Group Health Cooperative in Madison, WI. He moved back to Chicago in 1987 to become Executive Vice President of Michael Reese/Humana Health Plans. Throughout his life, he was involved in many community activities including election to the School Board for Grandview school district, Member/Chair of Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee, President of Association of Wisconsin HMOs and a long time member of the Rotary Society.
In retirement, he continued to provide his expertise to organizations such as SCORE and DayStar. During one of the worst catastrophes in US history, hurricane Katrina, he worked for weeks with FEMA in Houston to help relocate affected families. Reinforcing his dedication to community, he helped shut down drug houses in the urban Kansas City area, doing his part to help turn communities around.
He loved everything about life, fully embracing the people, locations and experiences that came his way. He and Carol traveled the country and world with memorable visits to China, Egypt and many countries in Europe. He also relished the experiences of everyday life, including weekends at their cabin in Galina, movie nights in the basement with family and friends and the annual celebration of Derby Day on their wedding anniversary.
He loved breakfast at simple places like The Ovens of Brittany in Madison and Lou Mitchel’s in Chicago. He loved duck hunting with friends on ice cold winter mornings. Everything that he did was with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.
These traits were infectious and will be remembered by everyone lucky enough to have know him. Funeral services for Patrick will be held at Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chicago, 700 W Adams St. on Wednesday, February 6 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.
Memorial donations can be made to the favorite charities of his family and friends. A memorial service will be planned in Kansas City in the spring.
