Paul D. Purnell, 78, formerly of Mount Joy, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Masonic Villages, Elizabethtown. Born in Barnsville, PA, he was the son of the late Arnold R. and Irene S. (Umberger) Purnell. Paul was the husband of Judith A. (Coppersmith) Purnell.

Paul retired from M&M Mars after 27 years of service in Maintenance in 2000. He later worked part time at the Manheim Auto Auction and drove bus at Masonic Villages. Paul was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown.

A Free and Accepted Mason, He was a member of Ashara-Casiphia Lodge, No. 551 of Mount Joy, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and Harrisburg Scottish Rite. Paul enjoyed vegetable gardening.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Judith, are two daughters, Susan Swope of Florida and Judy Purnell of Mount Joy; two step children, Michael Parmer, husband of Kelly of Marietta and Kimberly Parmer of Lancaster; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Russell Purnell. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Purnell and a son in law, Kenneth Swope. A memorial service honoring Paul’s life will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 11 North Queen Street, Maytown, on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11 AM.

Family and friends will be received at the church before the service from 10 AM to 11 AM. Interment will follow in Maytown Union Cemetery (adjoining the church). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Church, PO Box 96, Maytown, PA 17550.
