Richard D. Schachte, 87, of Lower Burrell, died Sunday, June 10, 2018 in Belair Health and Rehab Center in Lower Burrell. He was born August 16, 1930, in Hecla, Westmoreland County, son of the late Charles and Anastasia (Nolan) Schachte. Richard retired in September 1985 from the IRS where he worked as an accountant.

He was proud to have served his country in the US Army from 1948 to 1952. He was a member of VFW Post 92 and American Legion Post 868, both in Lower Burrell, and the New Kensington Eagles 533. Richard enjoyed gardening, hunting in Norvelt, and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

He was dedicated to his family, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pap”, “Pappy” or “Dickey Boy”. Richard is survived by his wife of almost 59 years (August 22), Eva (Ferazzi) Schachte; sons, Richard (Donna) Schachte of New Kensington and granddaughters Amanda, Sarah, and Elizabeth Schachte; Aaron (Christine) Schachte of Derry and grandchildren Matthew, Dustin and Vanessa Schachte; Charles (Tanya) Schachte of Allegheny Township and grandchildren, Charles, Haylie, Samuel and Jacob Schachte; Alban (Kathleen) Schachte of Montgomery, Alabama and grandsons, Adam and Joshua Schachte; sister, Catherine Lazor of Greensburg and brother, Cornelius (Helen) Schachte of Norvelt; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by brothers, Jack, James, Leroy, Joseph (Marie), Paul (Betty), Francis (Irene) Schachte; brother-in-law, Anthony Lazor; and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Joseph, Raphael and Scott.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, in FRANK F. GIGLER Funeral Home, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Margaret Mary Church in Lower Burrell, followed by full military honors by the Army and the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.

Everyone please meet at the Church. Those who wish to attend the committal service at the cemetery may follow the procession or meet the procession at the cemetery. Members of VFW Post 92 will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday for a service in the funeral home.
