Obituary for Richard “Dick” Bomgardner Torpedoman’s mate Richard “Dick” Bomgardner, 78, of Jonestown, passed into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Born in Hershey on November 3, 1940, he was the son of the late John and Christina Royer Bomgardner. He attended a United Church of Christ in Lebanon and was comforted by his friends, family and our Lord’s promise, “Because I live, you too shall live”.

(John 14:19) He felt privileged to have defended his country in Vietnam as a torpedoman on the USS Maddox (DD-731). He was one of the last surviving heroes to have engaged North Vietnamese and Chinese forces in the Tonkin Gulf on 2 & 4 August 1964. He completed his service to his comrades by serving as Honor Guard for the AmVets Post 293 and rose to Commander.

He later was Commander from 2009-2011 with the Navy Veterans Post 81 in Lebanon for eight years. He is survived by his son Richard Bomgardner II and his wife Melody of Bend Oregon; step-daughters Theresa wife of Kim Wentling of Fredericksburg, Denise wife of Terry Louer of Middletown, PA and Danette wife of Bill Rothenberger of Tampa, FL; half-brothers Butch Bomgardner and Snook Taylor; and half-sister Shelia Yake. His legacy continues with seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by brothers Ken, John and Fred, and sister Velma Rigdon. Each of his three step-daughters honored him as their father, when they chose him to give them away at their weddings. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

A procession will form at 2:30 p.m. from the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Rt. 72 & Camp Meeting Rd. , Jonestown.
