Richard “Dick”‘s Obituary Richard “Dick” Brian Hanna, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 26 2019, in Big Rapids, MI at the age of 79. He was born the youngest of three sons to Dr. Roger and Frances Hanna on June 12, 1939, in Jackson.

Dick graduated from Western Michigan University in accounting and became a CPA. In 1962, he married Germaine L. White and they moved to Lansing where he started his career as an auditor. In 1966 they moved back to Big Rapids where they reside to this day.

Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Germaine (Geri); their three sons, John Hanna of Belleville, Chris (Robin) Hanna of Austin, Texas and Mike Hanna and Carol Defrece of Rockford and one grandson Michael (Katie) Becherer. Dick was a partner at Kelly-Hanna & Assoc. accounting firm in Big Rapids.

He moved into teaching and was a professor of accounting at Central Michigan University, where he co-authored a text book on financial accounting, and was the head of the accounting department at Ferris State University until he retired in 2000. Active locally, he was the president of Northwestern Mutual Credit Union and joined the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountant’s Board of Directors in 2000. From 2002-2003 he was the Chairman of the Board for the MACPA.

In 2004 they awarded him the Distinguished Service Award. In retirement, he and Geri traveled North America extensively in their RV. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lowell (Meg) Hanna and Alan (MaryAnn) Hanna. Mass of the Resurrection will take place 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Michael Burt officiating. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 29th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids.

Per Dick’s request cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Manna Pantry.
