Obituary for Richard Merrifield Sr. CAMDEN – Richard E Merrifield, 83, of Hosmer Pond Road, died Saturday, September 22, 2018, at the Sussman House in Rockport, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Rockland, February 18, 1935, he was the son of Elmer W. and Evelyn Weymouth Merrifield. At an early age, Richard went to work with his father, Elmer (Skilly) Merrifield learning the skill of Carpentry from his father who worked for Earl Tolman and Sons of West Rockport.
He ultimately worked all his career with that firm, which later became Maynard E. Tolman & Son. Richard met his future wife Gloria Hooper while she was baby-sitting at a local residence. The couple were married on June 29th, 1954.
They lived all their married life and raised their family on Vinyl Street in Rockport. Richard was a devoted husband and stayed by Gloria’s side until her passing in 1994. Richard and family enjoyed traveling to the Hooper Family camp in Wesley, Maine.
Some of the best memories were made on the Guptill Ridge Road and Hooper’s Flat. You could hear the ring of horse shoes into the night all by Coleman lantern light! With his employer he traveled to New York, which was the first time he ever flew on a plane, and that is where he worked with and became great friends with Doctor John Root, who faithfully would stop by and see Richard often.
Richard is survived by his son, Brian L Merrifield and his wife Annette Byrd Merrifield of Warren; his daughters Debra J Vandunk and husband George of Waldoboro, Lisa M Carpentier and companion John Cox of Troy; seven grand-children; seven great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Richard will finally be re-united with his one true love Gloria, may you rest in peace. Private burial was at Rockville Cemetery.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions in Richard’s memory to the Maine Parkinson’s Society, 359 Perry Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
