Obituary for Richard Lee Shumate Jr. Richard Lee Shumate, Jr., 84, of 2437 Old Mayfield Rd, Danville, VA, died on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Duke Hospital after being in declining health for several weeks. Richard was born in Danville, VA on October 9, 1934, son of the late Richard Lee Shumate, Sr. and the late Dollie Turner Shumate. He spent all of his life in the Danville area where he attended Schoolfield High School and graduated from George Washington High School Class of 1955.

He then went to work for the City of Danville Public Works as a maintenance supervisor and then went on to work as a bus driver for Trailways Bus Company, D & M Bus Company, Carolina America, and Greyhound for over 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church for 50 years where he was a treasurer and a deacon; then he became a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church in 2009. He was also a member of the Poquoson Tribe of Red Men #124, the ATU Local 1700, and the Riverbend Vol.

Fire Department where he served on the board and would help collect money for the stews. On May 18, 1957, he married Lillian Atkins Shumate who survives of the residence. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by brothers, Clyde Alton Shumate (Sandra) of Ridgeway, VA and Robert Stanley Shumate (Nancy), of Danville, VA; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Sterling Wilson Shumate. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Schoolfield Baptist Church with the Reverend David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Shumate Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence, 2437 Old Mayfield Rd, Danville, VA 24541. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial donations be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church at 12 Schoolfield Dr. Danville, VA, 24541 or to a charity of your choice.
