Robert Wayne Steele, 62, of Burlington, died at 8:29 pm Thursday, May 31, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born February 24, 1956, in Iowa City, IA, he was the son of William Grant and Betty Jean Hartman Steele. Robert was a truck driver for Richers of Wever for 27 years.

He was a graduate of Burlington High School in 1974, and then attended North Iowa Area Community College. On one of his trucking routes, he came across a young alligator, which he took into his own care. He realized however that caring for it was beyond his abilities, and gave it to a restaurant, making the famous name ‘Gators’.

He loved his meatloaf meals, fishing, going to the casino, and most of all, spoiling his grandkids. Survivors include one son, John Michael (Haley) Steele of Galesburg, IL,three daughters, Jennifer Michelle (David) Carley of Mount Pleasant, IA, Samantha Elizabeth Steele of Mason City, IA, Olyvyan Lattea of Los Angeles, CA, three sisters, Mary Jo Wilson of Knoxville, TN, Rosemary Lee (Robert) Spindlow of Burlington, Phyllis Morris of Stronghurst, IL; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Mr. Steele will be 3:00 PM Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Gearhart officiating.
