Strawderman, 71, of Newberry, died Saturday morning March 9, 2019 at Medilodge in Sault Ste. Marie. Born March 23, 1947 in Hulbert, son of the late Clarence and Dorothy (Ferguson) Strawderman, Roy enlisted in the United States Army on July 12, 1966.

He served during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on June 19, 1968 and continued in the Army Reserve until July 11, 1972. Roy also served in the Army National Guard 1437th Engineers for over 12 years until his discharge on August 5, 1983. Roy was employed as an attendant nurse at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for 13 years and a longtime active member and former post commander for two years of the American Legion Post #74 serving on various committees.

He was also a member of F.O.E. Aerie #3701 and former past president. Roy was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed farming, mechanics and being an arborist.

In addition to his parents, Roy is preceded in death his siblings Delbert, Artie, Lillian and Bettie Strawderman and Elise VanVulkenburg; grandsons James and Matthew Lewis. Survivors include his wife, the former Millie Massey, of Newberry; children Sheri (Edwin) LaPlont of Lincoln Park, Hilda (Richard) Seim of Newberry, Scott (Amanda) Strawderman of Detroit, Tara Strawderman of Cedar Springs and Gail (Bill) Marsh of Topeka, KS; 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; siblings Margaret (Bryan) Sault Ste. Marie, Anna (Clifford) Boggs of Escanaba and Jessie Hannan of Petoskey.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday March 12, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the American Legion Post #74 with Pastor Mary Brooks officiating, Interment with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Army Honor Guard will take place in the spring at Hulbert Township Cemetery.
