Russell McComas Schmidt, 91, of Westminster died peacefully at home with his loving wife at his side on Saturday, April 28, 2018 . Russell was the husband and best friend of Ellsie “May” (Ford) Schmidt, with whom he celebrated 71 years of marriage on December 13, 2017. Born in Oakland Mill, MD on December 9, 1926, he was the eldest son of the late George C. and Jessie I. (McComas) Schmidt.

Russell worked for the Western Maryland Rail Road, the Maryland State Department of Transportation and Beacon Steel. He was the proud father of his four children, and mostly he delighted in being with his grandchildren.

Russell enjoyed gardening all his life and spent many, many hours pouring over seed catalogs and ordering new varieties of trees and beautiful flowers. Russell was an active bowler with his wife and enjoyed the fellowship of his competitive bowlers. In addition to his wife, Russell is survived by their four children; Larry M. Schmidt and wife Judith of Clarksville, TN, Brenda E. Trowbridge and husband Allen of York, PA, Aaron E. Schmidt of Westminster and Ann L. Mertens and husband John of Westminster; and his seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on, Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Ray Shutt officiating.

Interment will be in New Oakland Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave. , Westminster, MD 21157.
