Obituary for Russell P Hossbach Russell P. Hossbach passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the age of 97 years. He is survived by his son, Dr. Greg (Barbara) Hossbach of Loudon, TN, a grandson, John (Killeen) Hossbach of Carrollton, TX, a granddaughter Lauren (Palmer) Dzurella, and two great-granddaughters, Aurora Trinity Dzurella and Lillian Russell Dzurella, of De Soto, KS, numerous nieces, nephews and a plethora of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois A. Hossbach (nee Birkholz), in 2007, and his son, Gary Hossbach, in 2017.
Russell was a member of First Lutheran Church in Joliet and was an active member of the Will County Threshermen’s Association. He served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal in World War II as a cook at Fort McCoy in WI helping to prepare meals for 400 soldiers at basic training mess halls, and later worked with munitions at Savannah, IL. After retiring from 31 years of service with Sears Roebuck, he began his “second career” of cooking for and feeding the homeless and hungry in Joliet via the Shepherd’s Table.
During his service over a period of 21 years, he was honored by being chosen to be a member of the Will County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes contributions of senior citizens in the greater Will County area. He learned his cooking skills from his mother as a child.
The two of them would cook for boarders his mother took in at their Joliet home – men who worked at the Joliet Arsenal in Elwood, IL. As a result of serving his country during World War II, he had a wonderful opportunity to join an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., on June 30, 2015. Russell was known in the Joliet community for his life-time interests of gardening, raising canaries, and his wonderful baked goods, especially his German’s chocolate cakes, Grand Champion Sponge cakes, and a myriad of delightful desserts.
These were all truly the quintessence of gastronomical delight! Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home and Crematory, 2320 Black Road on Monday, July 2, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
