Susan Smith (74) of Altoona, passed on Sunday morning following complications from cancer, surgery, and kidney failure. She is one of six children of Earle Emory Smith and Thelma Fleming (Coleman) Smith formerly of Coleman Farm. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, older brother Earle Allen and daughter Joanne (Woleslagle) Haring.

She is survived by her two remaining daughters, both of Altoona, Thelma (Woleslagle) Williams and Pamela (Woleslagle) Garver. Four of the six siblings remain: Thomas Smith of Florida, Mondon Smith of Altoona, Nancy (Smith) Chriske of South Carolina and her identical twin, Sally (Smith) Murray. She adored her grandchildren: Bobby, Amber, Jeremy, Jarrett, Jacqueline, Jacob, Mariah, Caitlyn, and Trevor; and great-grandchildren Delilah, Olivia, Haylee, and, Octavia.

She will be missed by nieces and nephews: Diane, David, Kim, Bryan, Janelle, and many grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Her twin’s four daughters, who loved her like a second mom: Lisa Murray-Geibel of Altoona, Julie Smith of Duncansville, Cheri Himes of Oley, PA, and Denise Murray of Payson, Arizona. Susan was a light to those who knew her, and that light will persist in her passing.

Her journey was not always easy, but her smile and laugh were. She worked for the telephone company here in Altoona as an operator long before the “Ma Bell” breakup. Her job with Mellon bank took her to Delaware and after retiring, she took a job as the receptionist at Schagrin gas company.

Her customer service and caring attitude were legendary in her volunteer work, church activities, various vocations and for 5 decades as a vendor, or ‘helper’ at craft shows. She showed us all how to be our best around people. The family will hold a brief and private ceremony at Coleman Farm.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Blair County Humane Society or to the generous hearts at Hospice.
