Obituary for Suzanne Metzger Oster UTICA – Suzanne Metzger Oster fell asleep in the arms of Divine Love, to be with God, his Angels and Saints, on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at the Presbyterian Home, with her family by her side. She was born on March 5, 1934, in Utica, the daughter of Joseph J. and Mary F. (Sebastian) Metzger. Suzanne was educated in Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School, St. Francis de Sales High School and graduated from the College of St. Rose, Albany, in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
She taught in the Whitesboro Central School District for a year. On August 17, 1957, Suzanne married her childhood sweetheart, Lee J. Oster, in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Mr. Oster passed away on June 20, 2001, a 44 year union in which they grew spiritually closer year after year.
It was a marriage truly made in heaven. Suzanne, after raising six children with her husband, thoroughly enjoyed teaching kindergarten at Our Lady of Lourdes School for 15 years, retiring in 1988. She taught CCD classes at Our Lady of Lourdes, St. John the Baptist in Rome and St. Mary’s on South Street.
Suzanne volunteered in the office at St. Joseph St. Patrick and St. Mary’s Churches, St. Joseph Nursing Home for many years, a brief time with Hospice and also tutored at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica Public Schools and St. Mary’s, Clinton. Suzanne was a member of the Altar Rosary Society, taking care of the altar at St. Mary’s. Suzanne was a dedicated follower of Father LaFache’s Healing Ministry.
She received many blessings from the Healing Ministry which brought her closer to her Lord. She was a member of St. Joseph St. Patrick Perpetual Adoration Society since its beginning. Suzanne deeply enjoyed participating in prison ministry with her dear friend, Elinor Curri, and Right to Life at Planned Parenthood.
She was a daily communicant at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Chapel. The medical center chapel was her salvation after her husband passed on. Suzanne gives many thanks to the sisters, whom she loved, at St. Elizabeth for letting her worship and grow close to Jesus and his Blessed Mother by allowing her to attend daily Mass.
She was also thankful for the many blessings that Sister Rose Vincent gave her each morning and the many blessings and direction Father Comeskey gave to encourage her to offer her afflictions back to Jesus with calmness, resignation and complete acceptance of God’s holy will. Suzanne is survived by her beloved children, Joseph (Katherine) Oster, Michigan, Michael (Debra) Oster, Auburn, MaryBeth (Jim) Erlichman, Utica, Rosanne (Paul) Hillman, Westmoreland, John Oster, M.D., Colorado, David (Anne) Oster, North Carolina; her adored, much loved 14 grandchildren, Gwen and John Oster, Jamie and Michele Oster, Christine (Frank) Viola, Sara, Gretchen, Bernadette and Mary Lourdes Erlichman, Matthew (Fei), Jessica and Daniel Hillman, Christopher and Andrew Oster and great-grandson, Ethan James Pike. Suzanne also leaves her much beloved canine companion, Honey, who gave her much happiness along with many nieces, nephews and devoted friends.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Agnes Murray and Elizabeth Pfisterer; brother, Jack Metzger and brother-in-law, James C. Oster. The Oster family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Presbyterian Home. Special thanks to Sisters of St. Francis for their loving concern and spiritual support.
A special thank you and God’s love to her spiritual director, Father Anthony P. LaFache, the late Father John Comeskey and all those who prayed for Suzanne during her illness. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend funeral services on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, 2222 Genesee Street, Utica, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. The family will receive friends and relatives after the Mass.
At the family’s request, please omit floral offerings and consider Masses in Suzanne’s memory. Mass cards will be available at the Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd.
