Obituary for Victoria G. Schiller New York Mills – Victoria G. Schiller, 91, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side, August 9, 2018, at the Masonic Care Community. Victoria was born on October 14, 1926, in Patterson, NJ, the daughter of the late Walter and Marcella Gladysz Kluz. She graduated from UFA in 1944 and then received her practical nursing degree from the Utica State Hospital School of Nursing.
She worked at Utica and Marcy State Psychiatric Hospitals and St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home. After her nursing career, Victoria was employed as a drafting clerk at General Electric until 1989. She received many awards for streamlining procedures and increasing efficiency within the department.
She was selected to work on the AWACS radar surveillance program which to this day is integral to many military aircraft. She also received specialized training on the earliest version of computers and computer programming. While a senior in high school, she began correspondence with Walter J. Schiller, a Marine who was stationed in the Pacific in World War 2.
They married on May 25, 1946. Victoria and Walter built their home on her mother’s farm on Henderson Street in New York Mills, where they raised their family. They remained happily and deeply in love until Walter’s death on February 14, 2006.
Victoria was no stranger to hard work. Along with caring for her family and working full time, she helped on her mother’s farm, driving tractors, chasing loose cows, and plucking chickens. She was always amazed by the beauty of nature, especially the clouds and sky.
She had a deep passion for reading and classic movies, and she loved art, music, theater, and dance. Victoria and Walter took many trips to New York City to see Broadway musicals. Victoria was the rock of her family.
She was a loving, wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an inspiration with her work ethic and organizational skills. Family always came first, no matter what.
She took tremendous pride in passing on her family’s Polish heritage and traditions, and she took great pleasure in watching her family grow. She and Walter enjoyed visiting their children and helping all of them with their projects. Because of her farm experience, she was a great help on her daughter Kay’s farm, spending many hours hauling maple sap, helping with the cows, and washing eggs.
Victoria was a deeply devoted Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. Our family will always be so grateful for the loving, devoted care that she provided to our Dad in the years that he was ill. She sacrificed so very much of herself during that difficult time.
We could never thank her enough. Victoria is predeceased by her parents, Walter and Marcella Kluz, her beloved husband, Walter, her sister Wanda Kominiak, and her nephew George Kominiak.
